What what were the first comics you remember reading?
My older brother Albert gave me stacks of his comics, which include late 60s/early 70s runs of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, FANTASTIC FOUR, DAREDEVIL, INCREDIBLE HULK, BATMAN, etc. A great sampling of classic Marvel and DC comics.

Who are your main artistic influences?

Dia de los Muertos 2011 in Los Angeles (Day of the Dead)

Dia de Los Muertos 2011

Dia de Los Muertos 2011

Have you made plans for Dia de los Muertos? This is a fun, yet reverent Mexican holiday that dates back hundreds of years. On this day, a National holiday in Mexico, people remember loved ones that have passed. Like Halloween, it is celebrated with costumes and candy. You will see many people who have painted their faces like a fanciful skulls. At many of the events, they will sell skulls made of sugar that you may decorate and eat.

Need some suggestions on where to go? Then, check out LA Taco’s incredibly comprehensive list of events in the LA area at http://www.lataco.com/taco/2011-dia-muertos-day-dead-los-angeles. As this is LA, there are some interesting offshoots from the traditional celebrations.

Among the highlights of the 30+ events listed on LA Taco’s guide are:

It seems to get better each year.

John Leguizamo’s “Ghetto Klown” at the Montalban Theatre in Hollywood

John Leguizamo’s back with the new show “Ghetto Klown” at the Montalbán Theater in Hollywood. This is Leguizamo‘s fifth stage show. He has appeared in movies like Carlito’s Way and Moulin Rouge, voiced Sid the giant sloth in Ice Age, and even had his own variety show on TV for awhile.

Leguizamo puts on a great show. Joke after joke, he feeds off the energy of the audience and takes them to some of his happiest and darkest moments. You can feel the bond he has with his audience who react to him divulging moments in life portrayed in such a raw manner. How many of us are capable of looking at ourselves so closely and then show others what we see?

In the late nineties, he was the first Latino to have a one-man show on Broadway. He is a very young pioneer — young enough to dance much of the way through a 2 1/2 hour show.

As a testament to the show, I expected to take a picture of the show for this post, but by the time I remembered about the picture, the show was over. The picture above is from the Ghetto Klown Facebook page.

Go see it, you’ll enjoy it.

THE FOOD
There will be an abundance of traditional Thai dishes including pad thai, satay, and mango with sticky rice. This year also marks the beginning of the International Curry Festival.

THE BIRTH OF THE INTERNATIONAL CURRY FESTIVAL
The first instance of the Annual International Curry Festival will celebrate curry in all its forms. Curry transcends culture. Although originally from India, other cultures including Thailand and Japan have created national dishes flavored with curry.

More from Thai CDC:

Not only will the Thai curry be the super star that day, all kinds of curry related products, regardless of their national origins, shape, color, spice level, texture will be worshipped. All the international curry products will also have a chance to compete for the CURRY KING title. In this event people can try different kind of curry dishes, desserts, and snacks that are made with curry. In addition to that, the participants can learn how to make easy and flavorsome curry dishes and desserts demonstrated by star chef Jet Tila and others. People will also find unique and special curry ingredients from around the world that they have never seen and tasted before.

THE VARIETY OF THINGS TO DO
Over 200 booths, two main stages and a boxing ring will give you many ways to sample Thai culture.
Highlights: Thai water blessing (from 8am till 9am), Vendors selling Thai handicrafts, Muay Thai Boxing, a community parade, the Thai Traditional Attire Fashion Show, craft areas for the kids, Thai classical and folk dances, live music, the Singha Beer Garden, Miss Thai Town New Year USA beauty contest, Jonas and Kristy, intricate fruit carving demonstrations, free health screenings, and the 5k Run/Walk.

A 47-SECOND WALK FROM THE METRO RED LINE
HOLLYWOOD/WESTERN STOP

Use public transportation to the festival and skip the headache of searching for a parking space. Another option is to take the free shuttle from the large Hollywood Kaiser Permanente parking lot.

A CHANCE TO SPEAK THAI TO A CAPTIVE AUDIENCE
Say “sa-wat-di pi mai” (happy new year) to everyone you meet. You can also try “krai kai kai kai” which means “who sells chicken eggs?”. Click here for some more basic Thai phrases.
