gettytalk.jpg

The Getty Center will present the discussion, ”Chicano Culture in the Arts” on Sunday, January 27, 2008 at 4 pm.

The discussion will be moderated by Luis Rodriguez, author of  “Always Running“. The discussion will feature three prominent Chicano and Chicana panelists including muralist Ernesto de la Loza,  the visual storyteller Alma Lopez, and novelist Yxta Maya Murray.

From the Getty website:

The panelists discuss representations of East Los Angeles and Chicano culture in their own work and in the photographs of of Graciela Iturbide, which are featured in the exhibition The Goat’s Dance: Photographs by Graciela Iturbide(on view December 18, 2007–April 13, 2008 at the Getty Center). Do Iturbide’s beautiful portraits of the White Fence gang from the 1980s perpetuate stereotypes or allow us to see beyond them?

The museum is free to enter, but parking is 8 bucks. Click here to reserve a seat. The Getty Center is located at 1200 Getty Center Drive in Los Angeles.

More about the Tortilla Paintings from Joe Bravo’s website:

Joe Bravo has become quite well known for his innovative use of tortillas as a ground for traditional painting. Here’s what he has to say about his works: “I use the Tortilla as a Canvas because it is an integral part of the Hispanic Culture and my heritage. For the subject matter of my tortilla paintings, I use imagery that is representative of Latinos, conveying their hopes, art, beliefs and history. As the tortilla has given us life, I give it new life by using it as an art medium.”
