Tu Ciudad magazine – A year’s subscription for free

ciudadmag.jpg
Magazine cover images from CiudadMag.com

We read a bunch of magazines here at Eastside Scene to keep up with the latest happenings in the local Latino tableau. One of our favorites is the monthly  Tu Ciudad Magazine. The magazine covers music, arts, design, fashion, literature, film, restaurants, nightlife, cultural issues – many aspects of the lives of Los Angeles Latinos.   The back pages feature the “Ciudad Eats” section, listing over 120 of the best local Latino restaurants. To top it off, they have a great monthly calendar section that is well researched listing a variety of things to do. The magazine is normally $3.95 per issue.

Currently, the magazine has a special offer you cannot refuse — a year’s subscription to the magazine for free. Just go to CiudadMag.com, click on the link to the right of the Tu Ciudad logo, and fill out your contact information and the standard personal profile questions (age, education, income).

That is it. The magazine will be on its way.

Monte Negro to perform a free concert presented by Al Borde Acoustic Sessions

alborde3.jpg

On Friday, March 28, 2008 at 7:30, Monte Negro will be performing an acoustic and electric set to open the 2008 Al Borde Acousic Sessions at El Gallo Cafe.

Al Borde is a free bi-weekly Spanish-language magazine that has been covering the Latino rock scene for over 10 years. In 2007, they launched the ”Al Borde Acoustic Sessions” at their lounge in Norwalk. Previous concerts have included performances by Volumen Cero, Enjambre, Pastilla, and Go Betty Go.

The concerts are sponsored by Jack Daniels and Monster energy drinks. Concert goers get a great free concert, free drinks (Monster or Jack or Monster and Jack) and free food.

Reserve a spot by March 21 by e-mailing nhernandez@alborde.com  with your full name, e-mail, zip and age. You must be at least 21 years old to attend.

Listen to a few Monte Negro tunes at their My Space page. More about the band from their website:

Monte Negro, a bilingual Los Angeles based rock band, has devoured enough music genres over the years to do justice to the bilingual and bicultural musicians that constitute the group. Digesting healthy portions of Jane’s Addiction, The Cure, The Clash, and the Sex Pistols, Monte Negro has also piled onto its proverbial plate Latin- alternative rockers such as Caifanes, Los Fabuloso Cadillacs, Maldita Vecindad, Mano Negra, Soda Stereo, and Spinetta.

El Gallo Plaza is located at 4545 E. Cesar Chavez Ave. in East Los Angeles.

Latino Blogging in Los Angeles – Follow up post

downtownla.jpg
Image from Son Mis Locuras

The second meeting of local Latina/o bloggers took place this week in the eastside. It would be just as easy to point out the differences as the similarities amongst us. Mexican and Salvadorian and Guatemalan roots, 1st and 2nd and 3rd generation, students and artists and professionals. It just shows that the blanket term “Latina/o” covers alot of territory. To get a sense of the diversity of Latina/o voices, here are some of the blogs that were represented that night:

www.SonMisLocuras.com
www.WendyCarrillo.com
www.Pachucoville.blogspot.com
www.LoteriaChicana.net
www.SicklySeason.com
www.ViewFromaLoft.typepad.com
www.Lucesitas.wordpress.com

As before, the conversation went all over the place. It touched upon blogsbloggers, RSS, Obama, El Chavo, Cityhood for East Los Angeles, art, and stuff white people like.

Another meeting is scheduled for March 2008. If you are a blogger with a Latina/o-slant or potential Latina/o blogger come join the fun. Please email us at info@eastsidescene.com for the details of the next get-together in East Los Angeles.
